Venerable Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche|
Spiritual Director of FPMT
"Happiness and suffering are dependent upon your mind, upon your interpretation. They do not come from outside, from others. All of your happiness and all of your suffering are created by you, by your own mind."
Lama Zopa Rinpoche in Transforming Problems into Happiness
by Ailsa Cameron and Ven. Robina Courtin
Rinpoche was born in 1946 in the Solu Khumbu region of Nepal and recognized at the age of three as the reincarnation of the Lawudo Lama, a great meditator from that area. Rinpoche became a monk and was educated in monasteries in Nepal and Tibet.
Rinpoche escaped to India in 1959 and continued his studies in the Tibetan refugee camp of Buxa Duar in northern India. Soon after this, he started receiving teachings from Lama Thubten Yeshe, remaining with him as his heart disciple.
Rinpoche himself began teaching in 1970, giving his first meditation course to Westerners at Kopan Monastery, which the lamas founded near Baudhanath in the Kathmandu valley. He and Lama Yeshe were invited to the West by their growing number of students and were soon traveling and teaching regularly around the world.
The lamas remained together until Lama Yeshe passed away in March 1984. Two years later, Lama Yeshe's reincarnation, Tenzin Osel Rinpoche, born to Spanish parents, was formally recognized by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Lama Zopa Rinpoche is now the spiritual head of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), the name given by Lama Yeshe to the Dharma centers and other activities set up by the lamas' students in Asia, Europe, America, Australia and New Zealand. There are now over sixty such centers and activities.
Rinpoche travels constantly between these centers, teaching and guiding his thousands of disciples. He is renowned as a perfect example of the teachings he gives, displaying all the qualities of a bodhisattva in his tireless and compassionate work for others.
